Structural-aspect is an Eindhoven-based design and production studio. We design and manufacture furniture and spatial solutions, from the fixed XYZ collection to custom projects.

We design with the belief that the basis is already there with a reason. We start with a research of the already existing and translate those good aspects into a new concept that fits with the norms and values of the moment. We design with as little impact as possible and bring back the essence of the question.

With the focus on researching existing techniques and manufacturing methods, designing based on embodied knowledge and producing with the standards and values of the moment we create our own aesthetic identity and philosophy.

Manufacturing

Learning to understand a technique is the beginning of a structure. A structure is the beginning of an object. An object is the beginning of a space. A space is the beginning of a society. So to speak, the chain starts with knowledge about techniques and manufacturing methods, the structure.

Structural-aspect focuses also on the manufacturing method. The interdisciplinary expertise leads to various tracks in technology and design domains, such as architecture, design, woodworking and metalworking. During our career, interests will shift to other disciplines in order to learn more from what already exists and apply it in new concepts.

We agree that the products we live with, and use every day, play an important role in our well-being. Our added value is within the local production, respect for the material and the production process and possibilities. Make the chain as little as possible.

Material & technique

The XYZ collection is the most direct result of this way of working: one material (12mm pine plywood), one milling principle (45°), one machine (CNC milling) applied across a range of products, from bowl to chair.

Team

We are Thijs Smits (1994) and Jens van Deursen (1996). Both Eindhoven based designers with a hands-on mentality and big fascination for techniques and connections. We were the kind of kids who took everything apart to figure out how things fit together. And so started Structural Aspect.
